12 Kartemquin Associates make Newcity Film 50 List: Chicago's Screen Gems

Newcity Film has named twelve Kartemquin associates to its Film 50 2016 List: Chicago's Screen Gems. Retrospectives in New York and Los Angeles to Highlight Five Decades of Documentaries Nearly 1,000 Party Attendees Include CEO of PBS, Stars of Films and Directors from the Past 50 Years of Kartemquin, Elected Officials Not-for-profit documentary production collective Kartemquin Films, the Chicago-based producers of The Interrupters, and The Trials of Muhammad Ali, marks the occasion of its 50th Birthday Party tonight to announce major retrospectives in New York and Los Angeles this summer, a new fund to support filmmakers, and a showcase for emerging midwest independent documentary makers this fall. American Arab Airs on America ReFramed: February 9th 8pm

Usama Alshaibi’s film American Arab has its national television premiere on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at 8/7c on WORLD Channel, as part of the fourth season of America ReFramed, public media’s newest documentary series. American Arab to air on America Reframed

Usama Alshaibi’s documentary American Arab has its national television premiere on Tuesday, February 9, 2016, at 8 p.m. on WORLD Channel, as part of the fourth season of America ReFramed, public media’s newest documentary series. The film, made through Chicago production collective Kartemquin Films (makers of The Interupters), will be available for free streaming on www.worldchannel.org starting February 10, 2016. In American Arab, Iraqi-American Director Usama Alshaibi asks “Why is being an Arab suddenly the opposite of being a decent man?” Throughout the documentary, Alshaibi explores what it’s like to occupy the ‘space in between’ as a hyphenated American, specifically of Arab origin, during the surge of anti-Muslim sentiment that arose in post 9-11 America. KTQ producers star in 2014 New City Film 50

Chicago's New City magazine has published it's 2014 list of Chicago's "Screen Gems" - an annual list of the top 50 film artists in the city - and for the second year in a row, a Kartermquin producer is at #1. Steve James takes the top spot this year, receiving praise for his work on Life Itself and his long career of "explorations of the heart and humanity of Chicago." Out of the 50 names, the list contains a total of 11 Kartemquin producers and associates. These are: #1 - Steve James, director/producer of The Interrupters, and many more. Continued
