Director and Producer

David Washburn has collaborated with American Muslim storytellers for over a decade. His 2013 documentary, An American Mosque, tells the story of a hate-crime that destroyed a mosque in California and the interfaith healing that followed the arson. The film significantly impacted the public narrative around this largely unrecognized hate-crime (destroyed in 1994, it was the first American mosque razed by fire) and brought awareness to anti-Muslim bigotry before 9/11. The documentary was honored with awards by the Council on American Islamic Relations. It screened on public television nationwide for three years and was acquired by Al Jazeera for broadcast in the Middle East and North Africa.
