Kartemquin opens up archives for historic exhibition

Ahead of our 50th anniversary celebration on June 24th at the Harris Theater Rooftop, we open our archives to the Chicago public with the exhibition “Kartemquin Films 1966-2016: Democracy through Documentary” opening on May 21st and running through August 20th at Expo 72 (72 E. Hot Docs to honor Steve James with 2016 Outstanding Achievement Award

Toronto's Hot Docs has chosen Steve James as the recipient of its 2016 Outstanding Achievement Award. As part of the honour, Hot Docs will screen a retrospective during the 23rd annual Festival, April 28 to May 8, celebrating James’s distinguished career as a director and producer. “It's an honour to celebrate a filmmaker of such depth, humanity and integrity as Steve James with the Hot Docs Outstanding Achievement Award,” says Hot Docs director of programming Shane Smith. “Over a career spanning three decades his body of exceptional work has demonstrated his commitment to illuminating stories of grit, honour and personal sacrifice; and solidified his status as a master of the documentary form.” Continued

Steve James to share documentary tips in Vancouver & Portland

Documentary filmmakers in Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, British Columbia can glean some tips of the trade from Steve James, as he offers upcoming masterclass sessions. On March 14, DOC BC, in collaboration with Creative BC and DOXA Documentary Film Festival, offers "A Day with Steve James" in Vancouver. Steve will host one-on-one feedback sessions with filmmakers with works-in-progress, teach a Documentary Filmmaking Masterclass, and then present a special screening Life Itself.
