Stevie starts New York Steve James season

At IFC Center in New York at 8pm tonight celebrated director Steve James will attend a rare screening of his 2003 Kartemquin documentary Stevie. The event is hosted by the Stranger Than Fiction documentary programming series. Get tickets. Cynthia Fuchs of Pop Matters reviewed Stevie again ahead of the screening, giving the film 9/10 and praising the film's complexity and refusal to shape a judgment for the viewer: "Instead, it raises questions, considers unintended effects as well as good intentions. And it reveals the complex circulation of damage and anger, offenders and victims—who too often become offenders." Read the full review. The film was also reviewed by Elise Nakhnikian for The L Magazine, who described it as a "an engrossing meditation on the necessity for and limits of personal responsibility" and by Christoper Campbell for Spout.com/IndieWIRE, who launched a new series on "documentary classics" with an excellent review of the film. The screening kicks off a three-week whirlwind of Steve James screens in the Big Apple in which five of his documentaries will screen, with the hotly anticipated release of The Interrupters being the central focus. Screenings of Hoop Dreams, At the Death House Door, and No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson complete the series. Steve James will attending the July 28th screening of No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson at Maysles Cinema on July 28, and also the opening weekend screenings of The Interrupters on July 29 and July 30 at IFC Center.
