Prisoner of Her Past, Kartemquin's 2010 look into trauma, history, and family relationships, found its way into the WGN News spotlight this week. Anchor and reporter Larry Potash takes us through the story of Sonia Reich's late-onset Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder diagnosis and the journey of her son (Chicago Tribune journalist Howard Reich) to learn the hidden history of his mother's escape from the Holocaust. Decades after the war, Sonia has begun to believe again that there are people out to harm her, and without trust in doctors or medicine she grows impossible to treat. The segment explores Howard's discovery of and newfound appreciation for his mother's past, and highlights some of the farreaching effects felt by many victims of trauma, noting that "there are lessons here that could help all of us."
With a noted tradition of nurturing emerging talent and acting as a leading voice for independent media, Kartemquin is building on more than 50 years of history as Chicago’s documentary powerhouse.
