Jon Stuyvesant

Jon Stuyvesant is originally from Chicago, but currently lives and works in Brooklyn. He has been working in documentary film for over a decade and has also worked on a wide range of television shows for a host of networks. Jon earned a BFA in Film & Photography from the University of Illinois at Chicago where he studied under a very talented faculty including Jennifer Reeder, an award winning filmmaker/video artist, and Jim Morrisette, the current Technical Director at Kartemquin. He was a Director of Photography for American Promise, a thirteen-year feature documentary that follows two middle class African-American families as they navigate the ups and downs of parenting and educating their sons. The film won the 2013 Sundance Special Jury Prize and 2013 Full Frame Documentary Film Festival Jury Award. Jon is currently the Co-Producer and Director of Photography for Raising Bertie, and has worked with the director Margaret Byrne very closely for the last decade on countless projects. This project marks their first joint feature documentary. When Jon is not behind the camera he can be found eating bagels and singing in the shower, rarely at the same time.

“I believe that the process of making a film is almost more important than the film itself. If you surround yourself with creative people who believe in forming honest relationships with both your collaborators and/or subjects it is inevitable that you will be able to tell amazing stories. This film embodies this ideology for me and it is a gift to have been both a creative partner and a friend to all those involved.”
